Scientists have identified a certain strain of gut bacteria that produces ENORMOUS AMOUNTS OF ALCOHOL. Those who have the strain in the gut aren’t just more likely to get drunk even without tasting a drop of alcohol; they also risk developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

NAFLD refers to a range of liver diseases that affect those who drink little to no alcohol. It’s often characterized by a buildup of fat in the liver. NAFLD is among the most prevalent diseases in the world. In the U.S., it’s the most common form of chronic liver disease, AFFECTING AROUND A QUARTER OF ALL AMERICAN ADULTS. Despite its prevalence, scientists still don’t know its exact cause.

Get drunk, damage the liver

The researchers made the discovery after encountering a patient with severe liver damage. In particular, the patient also has a rare condition called auto-brewery syndrome (ABS), which causes him to get drunk after eating sugary foods.

At first, the team thought the patient had a yeast infection. People with ABS are prone to yeast infections, which also produces alcohol in the gut and cause intoxication in patients. But when anti-yeast medicine didn’t work, the team realized there was something else involved. K. pneumonia is considered a commensal bacteria, that is, it BENEFITS FROM ITS HOST WITHOUT HURTING HIM. The strains isolated from the patient’s gut, however, produced up to six times more alcohol than those found in healthy people. The team also took gut microbiome samples from healthy people and those with NAFLD. The researchers noted that nearly 60 percent of samples from those with NAFLD contained medium to high concentrations of the alcohol-producing K. pneumonia. In contrast, only six percent of healthy samples carried these strains.

The team also conducted in vivo studies by feeding germ-free mice with K. pneumonia isolated from the ABS patient. After the first month, the mice developed a fatty liver. In the next month, the mice had a liver that exhibited signs of scarring, indicating that long-term liver damage had been made. However, the damage was reversed when they were given an antibiotic. The team noted that the progression of LIVER DISEASE in the mice was similar to that of mice fed with alcohol.

However, it’s still unclear why bad K. pneumonia affects some people but poses little to no harm to others, it boils down to genetic differences: Some people may harbor a gut environment that’s suitable for the growth and colonization of bad K. pneumonia.

They also posited that these bacteria are transmitted from carriers such as food: “It’s likely that these particular bacteria enter people’s body via some carriers from the environment, like food.” He noted that these carriers are not prevalent as the cases of NAFLD are relatively few. The researchers said that their findings can help screen and treat NAFLD cases caused by bad K. pneumonia. The bacteria produce alcohol using sugar, which means patients have a detectable amount of alcohol in their blood after ingesting a simple glucose drink.

“If we can identify the cause sooner, we could treat and even prevent liver damage,” said scientist.

An international team of researchers conducted a series of experiments on mice to examine the link between the skeletal muscle and the gut micro biome – the trillions of live microorganisms that populate the gut. They found that mice with gut microbes had stronger skeletal muscles than germ-free mice. In addition, they identified genes and signaling pathways that may be linked to the gut micro biome. These genes and pathways play a role in regulating skeletal muscle mass and function.

“These results further strengthen the growing evidence of gut microbes acting as crucial gatekeepers to human health,” said Scientist, a biologist in Singapore and a co-author of the report.

The study opens new doors for the treatment of age-related muscle loss, he added. After the age of 30, adults lose as much as THREE TO FIVE PERCENT OF MUSCLE MASS PER DECADE. In turn, less muscle mass predisposes a person to falls and bone fractures.

Link between gut micro biome and skeletal muscle

For the study, the researchers conducted three sets of strength and movement exercises on mice with and without gut microbes. The tests included lifting weights and running on a small treadmill.

The mice with gut microbes performed better on the tests, indicating stronger skeletal muscles that produce greater amounts of energy. In contrast, the germ-free mice displayed reduced muscle mass and increased expression of genes linked to muscle atrophy. They also exhibited problems related to muscle function and the generation of new mitochondria – cell organelles that help produce energy for cellular activity by breaking down nutrients.

In addition, the researchers found that the germ-free mice had lower levels of the proteins rap-syn and LRP4, which are crucial for the assembly and function of a neuromuscular juncture. This is a chemical structure that facilitates communication between a motor nerve cell and a skeletal muscle fiber. When the two interact, they cause a muscle to contract, which is IMPORTANT FOR MOVEMENT POSTURE AND JOINTS STABILITY.

The researchers conducted further tests, this time taking microbial samples from the mice with gut bacteria and transplanting them to the germ-free mice. They observed that muscle growth and function were partially restored while markers of muscle atrophy were reduced. They also found increased expression of the genes encoding for rap-syn and LRP4.

The team is optimistic that their findings will lead to novel ways of maintaining skeletal muscle mass and function. This will primarily entail modulating the microbial composition of the gut, they said.

Gut micro biome affects muscle strength

Researchers compared the gut bacterial profiles of fit and physically active adults to those of adults who do not engage in exercise and have a less ideal body composition. The physically active group had higher levels of Prevotellaceae, Prevotella, Barnesiella, and Barnesiella intestinihominis, which are potentially good bacteria.

In a separate experiment, the team injected mice with gut microbes from the two groups. Mice that received samples from the physically active group displayed increased grip strength compared to the other group of mice.

The researchers concluded that identifying key differences among people’s bacterial profiles may further illuminate the role of the gut micro biome. In turn, medical experts can come up with measures to promote healthy aging.
